More English comedy in Porto and Lisbon!
What a dope fucking week holy shit. I did stand up comedy at a private event in Lisbon. I traveled up to Porto with another American comedian. I won a fiba 3x3 basketball competition. But that’s just like a cherry on top of the comedy sundae I had this past week. The private event was soooooo random.
I got an email from some dude who said he’d be interested in having a comedian at his event. Well shit, what a coincidence bro I happen to be a comedian and I will do events. so I said yes. this all went down last Friday. It was a social event for expats, and the crowd was on the older side. My type of crowd ya know? The kind of people who are really into dick jokes.
So here’s the context that makes it all that more hilarious for everyone except for me. There was supposed to be a different performer that had to cancel her singing performance with them. And I can only imagine how many people they asked to perform after that before getting to me. I was probably plan G or something. Here’s the fun part. Nobody at the event knew she wasn’t coming. And she was known and loved by everyone in the community. I was asked to announce that she would not be there - right before my performance. Yeah just go ahead and disappoint the fuck out of everyone and transition right into stand up comedy that absolutely nobody is expecting.
and that’s exactly what I did.
It didn’t go that bad honestly. I got everyone’s attention. Explained the sadness that their beloved singer would not be there for the evening. Talked to the whole of the crowd for a bit. Got a feel for where everyone was from. People were attentive and engaged. Then dive right into the funnies. it was all going pretty well. And then I got to my dirty jokes. and you could feeeeel people start checking out. I was even asked not to do the Cesar dressing joke cause it might turn some people off. and I love that joke. everyone audibly groans when I do that joke and it’s great. so I did it anyway. Do not invite me to do your event because I will say funny shit whether or not y’all are ready for it. they groaned. all of them. It was great. but yea the jokes get a bit dirtier after that and I would say I probably lost half the audience by the end of it all. The other half was still wondering what the fuck a comedian was doing there.
I had a lot of fun! it was great and I would surely go disrupt everyone’s evening again if asked. semen jokes and all. I don’t think I’ll be invited back to this particular event though. I should probably stick to comedy clubs and bars. I’m doing pretty okay there.
Unfortunately for me, I missed out on another Lisbon Comedy - shitty comedy night that same evening. it was a short notice show and I was already locked into doing the other show. but I rushed there afterward to see if I could get a spot. nope. it was over! everyone was just chillen and I saw a bunch of comedians hanging out. And then out of nowhere pops a fella named Adam Palmeter.
So Adam was here almost exactly one year prior when this whole English comedy thing in Lisbon was verrrrry different. There was no Lisbon Comedy. It was Lisbon Digital Nomad comedy shows. I didn’t know what fuck I was doing. It was my third time performing. but I very distinctly remember he complimented the erection joke.
So he performed that night at shitty comedy and I fuckin missed it. Here’s the thing about Adam. He’s a good comedian. Like really good. He’s been doing stand up for like almost a decade. Performed in New York for a couple of years. Lived that life. And then he shows up to the Lisbon English comedy scene and uh.. let’s just say it isn’t like New York. or even New York-ish. None of this shit even existed not more than a year ago. So honestly it’s dope for everyone here trying to level themselves up to be exposed to that.
I had another show at Selina Porto the coming Tuesday. Invited him to come up there and perform as well. And guess what? Everything just fuckin worked out the way it should and we hit that train north to Porto for some English comedy. The weather was perfect. We got an awesome spot right in the center of the city. Showed him around the city a bit. Awesome dude to travel with. Funny as fuck. Glad he came cause I got to see him perform and he killed it up there. Gonçalo was probably happy to see someone else besides just me going up there as well. It’s not easy to convince people to travel for three hours to do a free show around here. I had a chance to see Mario and João again as well. And here’s all of us having a swell time at the show. Good times. But yeah we did a pretty solid 24 hours of shenanigans in Porto before hitting the train back to Lisbon.
There’s one more comedy show in Porto on the 17th. I’m still trying to figure out a set I can do in Portuguese for the Thursday Portuguese shows at ODD. I have some videos concepts I need to finish for instagram. Lee is going to help me record some of them. I’m working on my new 10. I’m super busy with the comedy and it feels good as fuck. Oh and the Zebras started doing their shows again! Back to hosting twice a month hopefully. And maybe some other neat things in the works. We’ll see.
